DVC Off Campus Players
Off Campus Players
The name DVC "Off Campus Players" was chosen on December 1, 2005 at a meeting of those planning to attend the KCACTF Festival February 2006. We wanted to have a name we could use for fundraising we do for all the activities that happen off campus. This year's Off Campus Players created fundraising brouchures that can be used in future years for Festival attendees and other groups that will be traveling off campus.
The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival
22 students attended The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Cedar City, Utah, February 14-19 this school year. The had a week full of workshops, plays and fun association with fellow drama students from the Western Region of the US. Also, many students auditioned for the "Next Step Auditions" putting their acting and/or technical talents before the eyes of VIPS from professional theatres, Summer Repetory Companies and 4 year colleges across the US.
For the last thirteen years DVC has excelled at the KCACTF (The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival) and the Next Step Auditions. The festival and auditions have provided opportunities for DVC students to be admitted to four -year colleges, and professional theatres. At previous conference years two students from DVC were the finalists in the Irene Ryan Competition, and won first place. They were awarded a trip to Washington DC to perform at the national festival. Over 350 students compete at the Next Step Auditions. Only 50 are called back to the finals. Each year DVC students number anywhere from 5-10 in the final callback. At the festival, our students were called back and accepted to professional theatres and four- year colleges: Kinsmen Shakespeare Co., PCPA, CSU Fullerton, B Street Theatre and many others. They also attended and participated in over 25 productions and workshops. This conference is not just for actors, but technicians and student directors as well. Many of our students have been offered employment as a result of attending the festival.
Our Trip to KCACTF was February 13-19.
The Silent Auction
A silent auction was held before the trip to raise money to defray the student's expenses. This was a success.
Humble Boy
Our student directed play "Humble Boy" (directed by Mike Fallon) was chosen to present a scene at the Festival on the first evening we were there. This was a great honor, as plays from every college are considered and only a few chosen to present their production at the Festival. Our students presented the dinner scene at the Festival for an audience of over 300 students and faculty from all over the Region.
